"It involves preparing documents such as a last will and Testament, possibly a trust, changing the title of the properties that you own possibly naming beneficiaries on your 401k policy or on a life insurance policy that you have. It might include doing advanced medical directives, such as a power of attorney, naming someone to who can make decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated.

So it's really all of the things that you do while you're still alive. Probate on the other hand is something that happens and is done after you've passed away. So what I always tell people is estate planning is done while you're alive. Probate is something that is done after you've passed away."
